One of the most talked about locations of Mumbai, located in the heart of the city, Vile Parle witnesses people from all around Mumbai on their feet heading to their defined destinations throughout the day. Vile Parle, the name takes its roots from the two temples in the area (a fact unknown), namely, Virleshwar & Parleshwar. An area that is divided into two parts, the East & West, Vile Parle is home to a large number of Gujarati & Maharashtrian mumbaikars who have been residing there since decades.

Being centrally and strategically located, the area is very well connected with the rest of the city via its rail and roadways made available to the people. Once aboard the local train, one doesn’t just experience the beauty & surroundings of this place, but also gets carried away by that sweet smell of biscuit that spreads across from the Parle Factory throughout the area. Probably this is why I have heard people say this repeatedly, “Ye Parla Ki Mitti Khushboo Main Kuch Baat Hai”

A long time ago, when India was still under the British rule, a small factory was set up in Vile Parle to manufacture sweets and toffees. A decade after it’s establishment in 1929, Parle products began manufacturing what are now the largest selling biscuits in the world!

These biscuits that were launched as an Indian alternative to the British biscuits have now become one of the strongest household names in India. The biscuits that were once called “Parle Gluco biscuits” changed to “Parle-G” in the 80’s, with the slogan “G means Genius”. With this, Parle biscuits made itself a generic brand; consumed by people of all ages, from the rich to the poor, living in cities or in villages. For some, it’s just an accompaniment for tea, whereas some eat it to get charged on energy – not only in India, but also in different parts of the world.

Just like Hotel Parle International, the name “Parle-G” has been derived from the name of this very suburban area of Mumbai that the factory is located in. As a result, Vile Parle is automatically associated with the Parle Legacy, and vice versa.
